21st March 2011.....Needed to get the starter motor fixed on the estate today. During the week on the way home from work I heard a funny rattling noise when I went down a big hill. I pulled over but by then the noise stopped. I didn't think any more of it but Thursday morning when I tried to start the car all I got was a clonk! I dodn't want to mess about with it so have been using DHR which is no hardship. After removing the starter Saturday morning I found that the toothed bit wasn't very springy. I cleaned it up and put some WD40 on it until it moved more easily. I put it back on but it immediatly stuck again. So with a bump in 4th then a bump start in 2nd she fired up and I dorve her round the block. After that she started fine. I didn't touch her Sunday but she worked okay this morning. I still need to get another one as its not going to last much longer. The rest of the weekend was spent gardening and frog catching. Only 40 this year and 4 x 5ltr buckets of frogs spawn.
5th March 2011.....Sorry everyone for no write ups for two weeks but I have been overloaded at work. I'm getting back to some kind of normality now so normal service should be resumed. The good news from this weekend is that I spent time in the garage! News on DHR...she is back running and all seems well. If you can remember that far back the prop UJ's were change which then meant the prop was unbalanced. Well a few weekends back I took it to the balancers who said I need a whole new end because one bit moved when it shouldn't. This weekend I managed to stop that by taking it apart, putting eight punch marks on the prop and putting it back together again. It now doesn't move. I then put my new exhaust brackets on and the prop and went for a drive. At 55mph I got vibation. Back at the garage I turned the prop 180 degrees and tried again. This time I got up to 80mph with no vibration. So fingers crossed it might be okay. What I will have to do is keep my eye on the prop UJ's to see if my fix stays fixed. I will be using DHR this week as I really enjoyed driving her Sunday and know I should use her more. Next I turned my attension to the estate. She's been running fine but she's been leaving large puddles of oil whereever she's been, a bit like an incontinant puppy. It turned out to be the rocker cover gasket. Problem solved I then turned my attansion to the temperature gauge. This is the problem...I fitted a brand new 1159 temperature sensor but the gauge reads 130 all the time. I added an aftermarket gauge with the same results. If I put a GT sensor on the gauge does read better and it does 'warm up' with the car but still reads high'ish. I know my car wiring is for a dynamo and I have changed to an alternator and I know the wiring was different on the dash, (four wires instead of three), but I'm still without a realiable temperature gauge. I also promise to catch up on mails people have sent me and to add New Zealand Ron's new pictures and New Zealand Mike's.
